Building Biology
Alison has spent years studying Building Biology with the Institute
of Bau-Biologie & Ecology (IBE) in America.  As they offer the
most comprehensive and highest standard of training possible,
she travelled many times from Australia to the US in order to
  study with them.

She has attained their highest qualification, and has gone on to be a contributor and advisor to their learning programmes.

She is the Programme Director for the IBE in Australia, and is also listed on their website under “Find and Expert”

What is Building Biology ?

In a nutshell, Building Biology is the study of how our buildings affect our health.

Building Biology goes beyond ‘Green’.  It not only cares about how our buildings affect the health of the planet – but also how they affect our health as well.

How can Building Biology help you ?

Building Biology educates us all about how our homes are affecting our health – and then tells us what to do about it:  The different ways in which we can prevent our health from diminishing, and changes that we can make if our health is already compromised.

The Building Biology approach is about empowerment: about us being able to make differences in our own environments.

There are a number of ways in which Building Biology can help you.  It can provide you with:

•    Education.  The IBE provides a number of self-study courses, on-line programmes, and
seminars so that people can learn about the effect that buildings have on us.

     The courses range from:

      o    General interest level training

o    Practitioner level training – the 100 Series:  Courses aimed at architects, builders,
interior designers, renovators and remodellers, and health practitioners who want to
expand their knowledge.  Completing a self-study course and weekend seminar leads
to a BBP certification:  Building Biology Practitioner

o    Professional level training – the 200 Series.  Comprehensie programme aimed at those
who wish to take their training onto another level so that they can become Building
Biology Inspectors and Consultants. Completing a self-study course, 3 separate 5-day
residential programmes and exams, completing an in-depth assignment, and passing a
final exam leads to a BBEC certification:  Building Biology Environmental Consultant.

o    Advanced level training – the 300 Series.  Advanced level courses for those who have
already attained BBEC status, and seek to be leaders in the field.

•    Information & Guidance:  See their website at www.buildingbiology.net

•    Home Assessments: the ability to have your house assessed by a professional Building
Biology Environmental Consultant, so that you can find out the issues within your own home,
and receive advice on how best to remedy them.   Look at the “Find An Expert” page on
     www.buildingbiology.net

•    Guarantee of Quality & Integrity:  Building Biologists are only able to consult after they
have completed an extensive and rigorous course of study – the 200 series culminating in
a BBEC qualification.   No-one is allowed to consult as a Building Biologist until they have
fulfilled these requirements, and maintain their professional education through continuing
education.   Anyone who does so contravenes the IBE Code of Ethics.
